US stock data is in real time from the BATS exchange. Major index data like the DJ-30, SP-500, etc. is estimated for the last 15 minutes. Other indexes are 15 minute delayed. You can use ETFs based on the major indices as an alternative: DIA for the Dow 30, SPY for the S&P 500, QQQQ for the Nasdaq 100.
The real time data comes from the BATS exchange and the most recent 15 minutes only shows trades that occur on the BATS exchange. Data older than 15 minutes comes from the consolidated tape. Lightly traded stocks may trade on other exchanges and those trades will not be reflected on the chart.
Try clicking Price History, Comparisons and then un-checking the option to "Show Percent Scale".
The Watchlists are maintained by our servers and cannot be edited. You can make your own list of symbols by adding them to a Portfolio.
Can I use FreeStockCharts.com behind a firewall?
Firewalls prevent unauthorized programs from accessing the internet and must be configured to allow StockFinder to connect to our servers. Disabling a firewall may correct some issues, but they can still interfere with programs if you have not specified that they should always be allowed to access the internet. You may need to configure access to port numbers and/or server addresses. For FreeStockCharts.com, please make sure that ports 943 and 4502 through 4520 are open. The server addresses is data.freestockcharts.com. More info...
Click on Volume, then Edit. In addition to setting the Plot color, you have the option to Color by Price, Up and Down. "Up" and "down" are based on the net change in price from the previous bar. If the net change is zero, then the Plot Color is used to paint the bar. This lets you color Volume by up, down and no change in price.
Use your mouse scroll wheel or the zoom/scroll slider at the bottom of the chart to zoom in and out on the chart. The chart loads 500 bars of data so on a daily chart you can view about 2 years of history. If you change to a weekly chart, you can view approximately 10 years if you zoom all the way out.

All indicators are plotted using periods. The period changes with the bar interval on the chart. A 50 period moving average on a Daily chart is a 50-day moving average. A 50 period moving average on a weekly chart is a 50-week moving average.
Click on "note" and an edit box will pop up for you to type in your note.
There are several ways to configure candlesticks. Traditional candles are hollow when the close is above the open and filled when the close is below the open. Some software programs use color instead to distinguish up candles from down candles. We give you the ability to customize the candlesticks. In the example below, the candles are hollow or filled based on the relationship between the open and close, but they are colored based on the net change from the previous candle.
Some older Macs with the PowerPC chip are only supported by version 1 of Silverlight. The program requires Silverlight 2.
To erase Fibonacci retracements (or any other drawing tool), you have to hover over the original line used to draw the retracement. If drawn some time in the past, this line may be out of the visible portion of the screen. Zoom out our select a higher bar interval (weekly, etc.) to bring it into view.
A slow stochastic is just a 3-period smoothing of the %K calculation. Set the %K parameter to 3 for a slow Stochastic.
Click the View menu and uncheck "Scrolling Ticker"
The chart displays 500 bars. If you want to see further back you'll need to increase the bar interval to 2-day, Weekly, etc.
Click on Price History, then Edit and change the Plot Style to Candlesticks. You can also set this as the default plot style on all new charts by clicking Tools | System Defaults and changing the Default Plot Style to Candlestick.
Click the Edit Columns link and you'll see an X to the right of each column name. Just click the X to delete.
Two things to check: 1) Make sure the Average Type (simple, exponential) is the same and 2) make sure you are plotting a moving average of price and not some other plot on the chart. If you hover your mouse over the MovAvg legend on the chart you can see the line used as the source of the average. Figure 1 below shows a 50 period moving average of price. Figure 2 shows a 100 period average of a 50 period average.
